WINE - White grape varieties
A couple of months ago I visited together with my boyfriend the region Burgundy in the eastern part of France. This viticulture area is well-known for the best Chardonnays of the world. This area is divided into the following areas: Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte d'Or Mâconnais and Auxerre. One of my favorite wines of all times is a Puligny-Montrachet (Chardonnay). This wine originates from Côte de Beaune. Everything in this wine comes together, the smell, the taste, the balance, I cannot describe how good this is. It is a bit creamy, due to the wood and it has its specific honey and floral, ripe red apple and minerality on the pallet. Today I will discribe some common white grape varieties:
Chenin Blanc: Produced in The Loire, France, South Africa, Chile, USA, New Zealand. This was my favorite grape variety during my Scholar ship in South Africa. It is a dry wine with its typical fruity aftertaste like guava, pineapple and red apple. I would recommend this wine with chicken.
Sauvignon Blanc: Produced in The Loire, France, moreover, one of the top Sauvignon-Blanc comes from New-Zealand due to the compared cool-climate of France. The specific smell of a Sauvignon blanc is Asparagus, gooseberry, green pepper and sometimes it can smell a bit of cat pee. The taste is also quite green with a fruity aftertaste. Furthermore, this wine is almost never wooded. I would recommend this wine with sushi and fish.
Riesling: Produced in Germany and the Northern-part of France called the Elzas. One of my favorite wines which will surprise me every now and then. The main characteristics is its minerality and acidity. Riesling wines from Germany are extremely versatile and can be made either in dry, semi-sweet, sweet or dessert wine style. The wines are named as follows:
From dry to sweet:
- Halbtrocken
- Trocken
- Beerenauslese
- Trockenbeerenauslese.
Pinot Gris: A white grape variety, this grape variety is also called Grauburgunder in Germany. In Italy this grape variety is called Pinot Grigio. This wine originate from Burgundy, France. This wine is kind-off full-bodied for a white wine. The wine is velvety, it is a bit spicy and has some melon and pear on the nose. I can recommend this wine when you would like to drink something else than for example a Chardonnay. You can make a wine-food combination with a salad with goat cheese and fruit like figs.
What I would like to do this year is too share a specific wine which I have tasted. I will find wines which you can find easily too, for example wines from supermarkets and small wine-boutiques. Collaborate more in detail on one specific wine. I would like to experiment a bit more with pictures and information.
Wish you a nice day Monday!
Love,
Annalia
